Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • Icing sugar, for sprinkling

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in vanilla extract.
  4. Slowly add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until combined. Gradually add milk and mix until incorporated.
  5. Divide batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. To make the French buttercream, beat together powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, and cream until light and fluffy.
  8. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread ½ cup of buttercream over the top. Top with second cake layer and spread with another ½ cup of buttercream. Top with third layer and spread remaining buttercream over the top and sides of cake.
  9. Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve.
