  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk, plus extra for brushing
  • 1 large egg

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg.
  5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  6. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it gently a few times until it comes together.
